Most writers have read Stephen King's masterclass, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. It's full of tips and advice for aspiring writers. I have taken most of his guidance on board but omitted one habit King admitted he had.

From 1979 to 1987, King was addicted to cocaine and needed a buzz to write. Of course, he isn't the only writer to turn to special assistance to get their creativity flowing.

Hunter S. Thompson tried every substance he could. Jack Kerouac wrote his classic, On the Road, while on benzedrine, and Robert Louis Stevenson penned Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde while on a six-day cocaine binge.

I'm not comparing myself to any of those greats, aside from the fact that as I type this article, I am also heavily drugged, having consumed a cocktail of little pills.
