I woke up to my partner crying.
She had heard the news of the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. But, amongst the somewhat regular occurrence of shootings in the United States, this one hit home harder for her.
She grew up in San Antonio and regularly traveled to Uvalde for sports tournaments.
As I got on my phone and read the news reports, I asked myself the same question that I always ask.
Why does this keep happening? There is a perfect solution available — it has been done before in my home country of Australia.
Why can’t they do the same in the United States?
The day Australia changed forever
April 28th, 1996, was supposed to be another regular day in Port Arthur, a small town of just 53,000 people in the southern state of Tasmania, Australia. A historical tourist site, Port Arthur was a 19th-century penal settlement and is now an open-air museum.
